Wassily Kandinsky was born in Moscow in 1866 and did not take up painting seriously until he was thirty, when he left a law career for the academy in Munich. He is generally credited with the first wholly abstract paintings, and set out his reasoning in On the Spiritual in Art in 1911.
He taught at the Bauhaus from 1922 until the school was closed in 1933, then settled at Neuilly-sur-Seine outside Paris, where he died in 1944.
Work sold under an artist’s name covers a wide range: an original, a lifetime print, an authorised posthumous edition, or a later reproduction after the artist. Which one a piece is changes what it is worth, so we say plainly on each listing what we believe we have and what that is based on.
