There has been a glassworks at Saint-Louis-lès-Bitche in the Moselle since 1586. In 1767 Louis XV granted it the title of royal glassworks, and in 1781 it became the first house in continental Europe to make lead crystal, having worked out the English formula for itself.
It is known for cut and coloured crystal, paperweights, and stemware, and still produces at the same site.
