The maker

Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres
Founded 1740 at Vincennes; at Sèvres from 1756

Founded
Vincennes, 1740
At Sèvres
From 1756
Royal
Bought by Louis XV, 1759
Known for
Ground colours and gilding on soft- and hard-paste porcelain

The manufactory began at Vincennes in 1740 and moved to Sèvres, near Madame de Pompadour’s château at Bellevue, in 1756. Louis XV bought it outright in 1759, and it has been a French state manufactory ever since.

It made soft-paste and then hard-paste porcelain of the highest order — the ground colours, bleu céleste and rose Pompadour among them, and the gilding are what it is known for. It still produces at Sèvres today.
