Baccarat
Founded 1764, Baccarat, Lorraine
- Founded
- 1764, Baccarat, Lorraine
- Lead crystal
- From 1816
- Known for
- Stemware, chandeliers, paperweights, cut crystal
The glassworks at Baccarat in Lorraine was founded in 1764 under a licence from Louis XV and began making lead crystal in 1816. It supplied the French court and, from the nineteenth century, courts and heads of state well beyond France.
It is known for clear lead crystal of very high quality — stemware, chandeliers, paperweights and cut decorative glass — and remains in production at the original works.
Baccarat only began acid-stamping its mark in 1936. Earlier crystal is unmarked, and is attributed on form, cutting and quality — informed opinion, not a certification.

Notes on this piece
- On the attribution. Words such as “style of”, “manner of”, “attributed to”, “after” or “circle of”, and period-style labels such as “Louis XV style”, describe our informed opinion based on form, construction and materials. They are not a certification of authorship, and not a guarantee of investment value. Where authorship is documented, we say so plainly and name the evidence.
