- Clamshell, designed by Maurizio Tempestini
John Salterini emigrated from Italy to New York, where he first worked in journalism before moving into glass manufacturing and then wrought-iron furniture as a partner in Salterini & Gallo. After that partnership dissolved, he founded his own eponymous firm in 1934, producing wrought-iron patio and garden furniture from a Brooklyn studio.
Salterini's company became known for mid-century outdoor furniture combining organic and geometric forms — tables, chairs, chaise longues, ottomans and benches. Its best-known line, the Clamshell series, was designed for the firm by Italian architect and industrial designer Maurizio Tempestini.
