Fratelli Toso was founded on Murano in 1854 by six brothers of the Toso family, one of the oldest glassmaking families on the island. It began by making everyday blown glass and moved into the revival of historic Venetian techniques — murrine, millefiori and filigree.
In the twentieth century it worked with designers including Ermanno Toso and Pollio Perelda, and its mid-century murrine vases are what it is best known for now.
Murano glass was very largely unsigned, and several Toso firms operated on the island at once. Attribution to Fratelli Toso rests on technique, colour and form — informed opinion, not a certification of authorship.
