Large French Art Deco bronze doré chandelier attributed to Süe et Mare.
Rare and stunning French Art Deco bronze chandelier with geometric and floral design, having six scroll arms radiating out from a central relief-design sphere with an acorn finial below. Exceptional quality and craftsmanship. Delightfully heavy.
Measures: 40 1/2 in High × 23 1/4 in Diameter. Very good antique condition. Recently polished throughout. New wiring, new sockets.
About the designers to whom this chandelier is attributed. Louis Süe (1875–1968) entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1893 and trained as an architect in the atelier of Victor Laloux, taking his diploma in 1901; he practised as a painter and decorator alongside architecture. André Mare (1885–1932) was a painter and textile designer who studied at the École des Arts Décoratifs from 1904. During the First World War Mare served in the pioneering French camouflage section, applying Cubist-derived disruptive colour to artillery so that the eye could not resolve a gun barrel’s shape; he was decorated with the Military Cross by King George V on 10 August 1916, and left ten small sketchbooks of drawings and watercolours from the front. His ink and watercolour Le canon de 280 camouflé dates from that work.
In 1919 Süe and Mare founded the Compagnie des Arts Français at 116 rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honoré, producing complete interiors — furniture, textiles, ceramics, glass, bronzes and lighting. At the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs they had their own pavilion on the Esplanade des Invalides, titled the Musée d’Art Contemporain. Mare’s stylised rose, in garlands and baskets, is the motif most associated with the partnership; it appears in his work as early as the Maison Cubiste of 1912.
On the attribution. Süe et Mare lighting is very rarely marked — the Metropolitan Museum’s own Süe et Mare mirror records no marks at all, and auction houses have catalogued unmarked pieces to them on documentary grounds. Attribution in this field rests on the surviving archive of period photographs and publications rather than on a signature. Ours is an informed opinion based on form, motif and quality of casting, not a certification of authorship. Note also that the Süe–Mare partnership ended in 1927 and the Compagnie passed to Jacques Adnet in 1928, so any dating of this piece should sit within or before that period.

Packing
Packed by hand. Fragile items are double-boxed with custom foam inserts. Glass and detachable elements are removed, packed separately and reassembled on arrival.
If something arrives damaged
Photograph the packaging and the piece before unpacking further, and contact us within 48 hours. We handle all freight claims directly and will arrange a resolution.
Returns
One day from delivery for a change of mind — buyer pays shipping and a 15% restocking fee. If the fault is ours, none of that applies: 7 days, full refund including your original shipping, we pay the return freight, no restocking fee. See our refund policy.
