The firm traces to 1797, when Thomas Messenger (1767–1832) partnered with Thomas Phipson as Messenger and Phipson of Broad Street, Birmingham. The partnership dissolved in 1823, and after Thomas Messenger's death in 1832 the business continued under his sons as Thomas Messenger and Sons.
The firm made brass chandeliers, candelabra, and oil and gas lamps and fittings, and exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851. It continued trading into the early 1930s.
Several related Birmingham workshop names from the same family of lampmakers appear on period pieces; confirm the exact firm name against the mark on this specific piece.
