The design is attributed to by the highly inventive and influential rococo goldsmith and architect Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier (1695-1750). Born in Turin, Meissonnier emigrated to France to work in the royal Gobelins factory in 1724 and in 1726 succeeded Jean II Bérain as architect and draughtsman to the Chambre et Cabinet du Roi. His designs for candelabra and other objects appear in the Dousieme livre des Oeuvres de J. A. Messonnier, Livre de Chandeliers de Sculpture en Argent published by Gabriel Huquier in the 1740s. A similar candelabrum in the Munich Residenz is illustrated in Ottomeyer and Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen (Munich 1986).
The French movement is of high quality and is by Samuel Marti. It is in excellent clean and running condition. Condition of the case is very good, beautifully clean and bright with minor wear or discoloration and there are no losses. The dial is also in well preserved antique condition.

The case of this Louis XV period mantel clock was made by Samuel Marti et Cie (company) to whom a silver medal was awarded in 1889. This exceptional clock set is decorated with a scrolled leaf motif throughout, the fine case is surmounted by a cherub angel and a musical instrument. He worked in Paris throughout the 19th century and was one of the finest clock makers of his time.

Samuel Marti founded the firm in 1832 with two partners and became sole owner in 1841, working from Montbéliard in the Doubs — the corner of eastern France that produced most of the great French clockmakers. From 1863 the house worked closely with Japy Frères and marketed its movements from Paris.
Marti was one of the most prolific French movement makers of the nineteenth century, supplying clockmakers across France, Britain and the United States. The firm took medals at the Paris exhibitions of 1860, 1889, 1900 and 1931. A Marti movement is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Marti made movements, not cases. A Marti stamp inside a clock tells you who made the works; the case is usually by another hand, and where we know whose we say so.

Packing
Packed by hand. Fragile items are double-boxed with custom foam inserts. Glass and detachable elements are removed, packed separately and reassembled on arrival.
If something arrives damaged
Photograph the packaging and the piece before unpacking further, and contact us within 48 hours. We handle all freight claims directly and will arrange a resolution.
Returns
One day from delivery for a change of mind — buyer pays shipping and a 15% restocking fee. If the fault is ours, none of that applies: 7 days, full refund including your original shipping, we pay the return freight, no restocking fee. See our refund policy.
