The piece

An elegant and finely modelled French Art Deco bronze vide-poche, attributed to Louis-Albert Carvin (1875-1951), depicting a hummingbird poised in mid-flight above a stylised gilt bronze leaf.

The piece is worked with naturalistic detail: articulated plumage, extended wings and a sculptural leaf form in warm fire-gilt bronze with hand-finished vein detailing. A small applied beetle accent enhances the naturalist theme.

The bronze displays a nuanced brown patina with soft green undertones, contrasting the luminous gilt surface. The composition functions as both sculpture and refined desk accessory.
