Fenton Art Glass was founded in 1905 by brothers Frank L. Fenton and John W. Fenton in Martins Ferry, Ohio, initially painting decoration onto glass blanks made by other manufacturers. Unable to source enough blank glass, the brothers built their own factory across the Ohio River in Williamstown, West Virginia; the first glass was produced there on January 2, 1907.
Fenton became the largest manufacturer of handmade colored glass in the United States and a leader in iridescent pressed "carnival" glass.
