Daum was founded in 1878 in Nancy, France, by Jean Daum (1825–1885), a notary from Bitche who settled in Nancy in 1876 after the Franco-Prussian War. Initial production centered on utilitarian glass, tableware, stemware, and watch crystals.
From the mid-1890s, under Jean Daum's sons Auguste and Antonin, the firm moved into decorative art glass of the Art Nouveau period, winning a Grand Prix at the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition. The house continues operating today as Maison Daum.
