Georges Rouault was a 20th century French painter associated with the Fauvist and Expressionist movements. Born in Paris, Rouault studied at the Ecole Des Beaux Arts and met Henri Matisse, Albert Marquet and Charles Camoin, which brought him to Fauvism under the leadership of Matisse. His Expressionist style later in life is attributed to the influence of Vincent van Gogh, and his painting “The Old King” is regarded as his best Expressionist paintings.

Georges Rouault was a French painter, draughtsman, and printmaker associated with Fauvism and Expressionism. Born in Paris in 1871, he apprenticed as a glass painter and restorer from age 14 until 1890, then entered the École des Beaux-Arts, where Gustave Moreau became his teacher; Henri Matisse and Albert Marquet were fellow students.
His early training in stained glass is considered a source of the heavy black contouring and glowing color in his mature painting. He exhibited with the Fauvists at the 1905 Salon d'Automne, and from 1907 painted a series on courts, clowns, and prostitutes read as social criticism. From the 1930s he turned increasingly to religious subject matter.
