The piece
This captivating antique Chinese scholar stone, estimated to be from the late 19th century, evokes a sense of tranquility and inspires contemplation. The "spirited stone," resembling a majestic mountain peak, features a harmonious form and a weathered surface adorned with grottoes of various sizes, some even connecting in intriguing loops.

Nature's artistry is evident in the ocher hues, interspersed with delicate patches of pink and white.

These stones, eroded by the waters of Taihu Lake, have captivated Chinese scholars since the Tang Dynasty. Traditionally displayed in scholar's studies, these miniature landscapes served as a source of meditation and connection with nature.

Standing at 25" tall on its own, and 28.5" with the custom Italian black marble stand, this impressive piece resembles a scholar's mountain straight out of a traditional Chinese painting. While its greenish areas may bring jade to mind, it's actually a complex colored marble. The vintage stone rests elegantly on a later custom elm wood stand featuring graceful cabriole legs.

For added convenience, the stone sits in a base that smoothly rotates on a Lazy Susan-style ball bearing slide.

More than just a decorative object, this scholar rock embodies a rich history and cultural significance.

It would make a stunning addition to any home, offering a touch of organic beauty and a connection to ancient Chinese traditions. Whether displayed in a contemporary or minimalist setting, this piece is sure to become a dramatic and conversation-starting focal point.

Scholar's stones were often found in the homes of the wealthy and were collected for their beauty and symbolic value. Chinese collectors liked to meditate on these stones which took the form of exaggerated and picturesque mountain landscapes. The piece makes an ideal addition to any contemporary or modern home. This scholar stone sculpture would make a dramatic and refreshingly organic addition to a modern Minimalist decor scheme.
