The piece

A wall console in the Louis XIV manner, hand-forged iron with a serpentine shaped marble top of a beautiful colour. The console has two pronounced curved legs at the front sides, meant to rest against the wall. Each leg is connected by an impressive foliate design with a fleur-de-lis central reserve. The powerful apron displays scrolled movements centring a finely carved sun symbol reserve, and each side is decorated in the same fashion.

On the motifs and the date. The sun was Louis XIV’s personal emblem and the fleur-de-lis the arms of France. Both are style indicators rather than evidence of date or of royal ownership — each was in use long before and long after that reign, non-royal use of the fleur-de-lis is documented from the early 13th century, and both were produced again in quantity in the 19th century. Separately, the serpentine profile belongs to the Régence and Louis XV taste rather than to the opening years of the 1700s.

We therefore describe this as a console in the Louis XIV manner rather than assign it a firm period, because that is what the piece itself supports. We are glad to discuss it in more detail with anyone considering it.
