Pieter Brueghel the Younger was a Flemish painter, the eldest son of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, born in Brussels between May and October 1564. His father died when he was five; he was raised by his grandmother, the miniaturist Mayken Verhulst, and was listed as an independent master in the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke registers of 1584/1585.
He operated a large studio in Antwerp producing copies of his father's compositions, transferring engravings and drawings after his father's work onto canvas for local sale and export, alongside original compositions of his own.
