The Shine That Was Never Meant to Be Even
Look closely at a fine giltwood frame and the shine isn't uniform at all — some passages burn mirror-bright under the light, others stay flat and matte a few inches away. That contrast wasn't an accident or a flaw. It's two different gilding techniques, doing two different jobs, on purpose.
Look closely at a well-carved giltwood mirror in raking light and the gold isn't behaving the same way across the whole frame. A raised acanthus leaf throws back a genuine mirror-bright reflection; the recessed ground just beside it stays flat and matte, no reflection at all. That's not damage, and it's not inconsistency. It's two entirely different gilding techniques sharing one object, deployed on purpose — and knowing the difference changes how you look at every gilt surface afterward.
Water gilding lays gold leaf over a colored clay ground called bole, itself sitting on a gesso base, and can be burnished with a hard agate tool to a real mirror polish. Oil gilding — also called mordant gilding — lays leaf over an oil-based adhesive that dries tacky rather than wet, and stays a uniform matte or satin finish no matter how it's worked afterward, because there's no bole layer underneath capable of taking that kind of polish.
How water gilding actually earns its shine
The process starts with several layers of gesso, sanded glassy-smooth, then a bole ground — traditionally red or yellow clay, chosen partly because its warm tone glows through worn gold exactly the way a genuinely old surface should. Gold leaf, just a few microns thick, goes on over bole activated with water, and while it's still workable, a gilder selectively burnishes chosen areas with polished agate, compressing leaf and bole together into a true mirror surface — while leaving other areas deliberately untouched and matte. That selective contrast is the actual craft. It's why fine eighteenth-century giltwood seems to come alive as the light in a room shifts, in a way a uniformly shiny surface simply can't.
Why oil gilding earned its place anyway
Oil gilding is faster, tougher, and far better suited to exterior work, large architectural surfaces, or a tighter budget, because its oil-based mordant shrugs off handling, humidity, and weather in a way water gilding's more delicate bole never could. It was the practical, everyday choice for anything that had to survive more than careful indoor handling, or for a commission where the selective burnished-and-matte contrast simply wasn't worth the extra skill and cost. Plenty of genuine, well-made period gilding is oil gilding, no lesser for it — the same relationship marquetry has to parquetry, a different tool for a different job, not a downgrade.
What to actually notice
Tilt the piece under a low, raking light. If some carved high points throw back a genuine mirror reflection while the recesses right next to them stay flat, that contrast is water gilding doing its job, and it should follow the logic of the carving — raised elements burnished, recesses left matte — rather than showing up at random. If the whole surface reads as a uniform satin sheen, however fine the carving underneath, that's oil gilding. Wear tells the same story from a different angle: worn water gilding often shows a warm red or yellow bole peeking through at high-contact points, exactly the detail collectors look for as proof of honest age, while worn oil gilding tends to reveal plain wood or gesso beneath, no colored layer at all.
A few things worth knowing
Can one piece carry both techniques? Yes, and the finest eighteenth-century French and Italian work often does — principal carved elements water-gilt and burnished for maximum contrast, a broader, less visible ground oil-gilt for speed and economy. Getting the transition between the two invisible takes real skill.
Does modern restoration gilding still use the same two methods? Yes, largely unchanged since the eighteenth century, which is exactly why telling a period gilt surface from a later, skillfully re-gilt one relies more on the wear pattern and the bole's exposure than on the technique itself.
Does red bole mean older than yellow bole? No — both were used throughout the period, sometimes on the same piece for different areas, depending entirely on a workshop's own materials. Bole color tells you about a workshop's choices, not an object's age.
