Cattle horn was softened in hot water, split lengthwise and pressed flat between heated plates until it became translucent, then tinted from behind with pigment in glue before being laid down. Because horn is naturally yellowish, a blue pigment applied behind it reads as green. The technique is a cousin of Boulle work in tortoiseshell — the same logic of translucent keratin over a coloured ground, cut and mounted in ormolu — and it carries none of the wildlife-trade restrictions that apply to tortoiseshell or ivory. This is ordinary domestic cattle horn, a livestock by-product.

About the signature. The dial is signed A. Gosselin. The Gosselin name appears in 18th century Paris in both the clockmaking and the cabinetmaking trades, which were separate guilds with separate masterships. On a French cartel of this period the dial and movement carry the horloger, while the case is the work of a different craftsman and is signed separately and elsewhere — a name on a Paris clock of this date identifies one trade’s contribution, not sole authorship. We have not established which Gosselin this signature belongs to, and prefer to say so plainly rather than guess.

Clock is in very good antique condition and functions, but may need to be serviced again after shipping just as all clocks do. Przirembel was a native of Pitschen in Silesia, was received maître menuisier-ébéniste in Paris on 16 June 1766, married three years later in the chapel of the Swedish Embassy to the daughter of a watchmaker, and settled in the rue des Cannettes near the place Saint-Sulpice. He was still working in August 1795, and was known in the trade by his first name, Godefroy. He produced mahogany furniture in particular.

Because only a master could hold and strike a guild stamp, a piece bearing his estampille cannot pre-date 16 June 1766. We have previously described this commode as early 18th century; that is not possible and we have corrected it. The stamp places the piece at 1766 or later, which is Transition and Louis XVI territory rather than Louis XV, even though the form is in the earlier taste. We are listing it as Louis XV style for that reason, and we would rather correct our own description than leave a date on it that the stamp contradicts.

Dimensions: Depth 25 in × Width 51.50 in × Height 32.50 in

Important pair of 18th century Louis XVI armchairs stamped Menuisier du Roy (Ebeniste of the King).
Very generous proportions, these beautiful armchairs are constructed with strong beechwood and are sturdy enough to be used daily. Known for his meticulous attention to detail and use of luxurious materials, Leleu's furniture often featured clean lines and exquisite embellishments, like the marquetry seen on this piece. While he did not win the fame of such contemporaries as Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann and Jean-Michel Frank, Leleu had a longer career and was easily their peer in the conception of trim, refined furniture forms and in the use of the opulent materials, from lacquer and ivory to sharkskin and exotic woods, that were a keynote of haute Art Deco design.

Leleu was born into a family of artisans and decorators. Their firm, Maison Leleu, had existed since the 18th century and Jules would guide it through much of the 20th. (The business lasted until 1973, headed at the end by Jules's children.) He studied architecture, served as an aviator in World War I, and after the conflict took up design full-time. Leleu presented work at the 1925 exposition in Paris that gave us the term Art Deco, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York purchased a burl amboyna wood commode by Leleu directly from the show.

As the furniture presented here shows, Leleu was a stickler for precision and detailed craftsmanship. He preferred to let his materials do the talking, his furniture is generally spare and sleek; its presence is established by figuring (or patterning/graining) in the wood and the occasional marquetry medallion. He had a keen eye for currents in design, and an adaptable sensibility. Maison Leleu would embrace many of the starker forms of modernism after the 1940s, as well as new materials such as artificial lacquer and plastics (then considered cutting-edge rather than cheap). Jules Leleu is a guiding light of 20th-century modernism: a man whose work represents both a devotion to traditional handiwork and an appreciation for the next wave in design.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0766/8652/4673/files/f_14410711_1714082176383_bg_processed.jpg?v=1783522039
fine-english-queen-anne-walnut-bookcase-with-secretary-desk
Fine English Queen Anne Walnut Bookcase with Secretary Desk

A fine 18th century English Queen Anne-period furnishings such as this walnut secretary are incredibly rare and important examples of English cabinetmaking, all original. He worked in the rue de Charenton, opposite the rue Saint-Nicolas, under the sign of the Image of Saint Peter — his own patron saint. Between 1775 and 1780 he received commissions from the Prince de Condé totalling some 10,000 livres for the Palais-Bourbon and the château de Chantilly, and he became one of the suppliers of the Court. Furniture stamped by him is held by the Petit Palais and the Musée Carnavalet in Paris, and by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, whose example is an upright secretary of about 1775 to 1780.

What the stamp does and does not mean. Roussel ran at least three workshops, a store-room and a retail shop; he was a manufacturer and merchant as much as a craftsman, and the P. ROUSSEL punch functioned as a house mark. After his death in 1782 his widow, Marie-Antoinette Fontaine, continued to run the business and kept using her husband’s mark to sign the work of their sons, as the guild rules allowed. Most surviving stamped pieces are held to date from Roussel’s own lifetime, but the stamp identifies the house rather than a pair of hands, and we would rather set that out than imply more than it can carry.

Dimensions: 42 1/8 in Wide × 21 1/4 in Deep × 32 1/2 in High

Traditional 18th century French Louis XVI Provençal table fountain, today's use a lovely centerpiece. That is incorrect and we have changed it. Delftware means Dutch tin-glazed earthenware; the French equivalent is faience. This piece is French.

Tempesta’s hunting engravings were the source for a whole class of large Moustiers display platters, and the Musée de la Faïence at Moustiers records that some fifteen of his prints supplied the entire repertoire. The Victoria and Albert Museum holds comparable Clérissy-workshop dishes of similar size and subject, catalogued as after Tempesta engravings. These large platters — plats d’apparat — were made for display rather than for service.

On the mark. Clérissy-period Moustiers pieces were largely unmarked, and no recorded Moustiers mark corresponds to C.V. We have not had it examined by a specialist and are not claiming a firm workshop attribution on the strength of it.
